Ebook Reader Tablets | A look at 3 of the Most Popular Electronic Book Readers

by ebooks on March 6, 2011

Technology is indeed advancing fast, and one of the latest gadgets we have today is the ebook reader tablet. This particular gadget allows users to download, read, and share ebooks with other users. It is easy and convenient to use, and a lot of people have actually chosen it over real books. Well, an ebook reader tablet may offer plenty of advantages to us; but just like most things, it also has certain disadvantages that we have to consider.

The Nook Color Pros and Cons

One of the most popular ebook reader tablets is the Nook Color by Barnes and Noble. It features a seven-inch, high-resolution LED backlit ISP display. It operates on Android, streams Internet radio, plays music, and plays ebook videos including those in MP4 formats. It can be used to browse the Web, import Google contacts, send and receive e-mails, and directly connect to Twitter and Facebook. It is ideal for reading materials with colored contents such as magazines, newspapers, comics, and children’s books.

This ebook reader tablet also supports Wi-Fi connectivity, and has access to Barnes and Noble’s in-store exclusive contents and free ebooks. You can adjust its backlight brightness, font size, spacing, type, and background color as well as install third-party applications on it. In addition, you may customize its wallpaper, homepage, and bookshelves.

Then again, this ebook reader tablet also has disadvantages. It is quite heavy, and its LCD display is prone to poor visibility when the lighting is too bright. Some users may experience eyestrain when using backlit LCD displays. The Nook Color also has a fairly short battery life span of only eight hours. Its battery, though, is not user-replaceable. Moreover, it does not support 3G connection and it has no Flash support. You may also not have full access to all the applications.

The Kineo Pros and Cons

Brainchild’s Kineo is another cool ebook reader tablet. It runs on Android, and is especially designed for students. It is user-friendly and has various interesting features and specifications. For instance, it has a seven-inch widescreen display and an 800MHz dual core processor. It features a 256MB RAM and a 2GB internal storage. It uses a 4500 mAh battery that can run for ten to twelve hours. It is rugged and resistant. It also offers a SD card slot and HDMI output. Furthermore, it supports Wi-Fi connectivity.

However, even if the Kineo seems like a really nice gadget, it may not be suitable for some users. Because it is intended for students, it cannot take photos, record videos, or send text messages. So, you might get bored with it if you are not a student.

The iPad Pros and Cons

Of course, who has not heard of the iPad by Apple? It is by far the most sought-after ebook reader tablet today. It can run third-party applications without modification as well as HTML5. It has an awesome app store, and its interface is very similar to that of the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is lightweight and user-friendly. Plus, it features a digital compass, an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, a 3G-assisted GPS, a built-in speaker and microphone, and a custom 1GHz Apple A4 chip. It is also multitouch-compatible, and it supports Wi-Fi connectivity. Its battery can also last up to ten hours.

Nonetheless, it also has certain disadvantages. It does not have a USB port, an HDMI output, and a built-in SD card reader. It also does not support camera and flash.
